Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why DaySpring Community Church?

We started DaySpring in October of 2000 to be part of the great church planting movement that is underway worldwide. Our mission statement (which we shout out every Sunday) explains our purpose:

"DaySpring exists to excite men and women, boys and girls, about a life-changing relationship with Jesus and to release these disciples for ministry in this community and around the world for the glory of God!"

Our motto is something the great Catherine Booth used to whisper to her children before she tucked them in at night:  "We do not exist for ourselves, we exist for others.  The world is waiting for us."

What are you trying to do?

DaySpring wants to take seriously the Great Commission (Go... and make disciples) and the Great Commandments (Love God... love your neighbor). We try to do this by keeping evangelism, compassionate ministry and missions at the forefront of our church life. Weekly DaySpring is involved in prison ministry, sidewalk counseling at abortion clinics, nursing home visitation, crisis pregnancy counseling, and prayer ministry (we have an effective prayer hotline).  We also have a "Work and Witness" emphasis in our church that sends groups out to places of need in our state and in other countries.

In fact, in the DaySpring sanctuary hang 21 flags of various nations where we have been to spread God's love in the last few years. We plan on adding many more.

What is your style of worship?

We have a contemporary service with a complete band. We sing a number of contemporary songs and one or two hymns most services.  We enjoy a wonderful time of celebrating what God is doing through His people and an extended time of prayer for those who need a special touch from the Lord.  Our preaching is biblical and deals with issues that we wrestle with day-to-day.

What about your Sunday School program?

Instead of Sunday school we have a great children's church (during the sermon time of the worship service), Sunday evening home cell groups that meet in various places around the Jackson Metro area, and a youth group that meets on Wednesday evening during the prayer service.

Prayer service?

On Wednesday evenings we have a prayer time for an hour where (based on the Scripture for the evening) weadore God, confess our sins to Him, give Him thanksgiving, and then ask Him for help with our mission and opportunities. We also pray for to help those who have called our prayer hotline that week. It is a highlight of the week for those who attend. We usually go out afterwards for some fellowship at a nearby restaurant.

What is your doctrine?

Look at our Articles of Faith page. But, on the whole, we have a high view of Scripture and want to follow it in things both great and small.  We believe Jesus taught many life-changing truths but also died for our sins so that we might enjoy Him forever in heaven. We believe in the infilling of the Holy Spirit so that we can walk as Jesus walked today and take the gospel to the ends of our community and the ends of the earth.

We ask people to sign on to these tenets of faith for membership:

  • In one God: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
  • That the Old and New Testament Scriptures, given by plenary (fully) inspiration, contain all truth necessary to faith and Christian living.
  • That man is born with a fallen nature, and is, therefore, inclined to evil, and that continually.
  • That the finally impenitent are hopelessly and eternally lost.
That the atonement through Jesus Christ is for the whole human race; and that whosoever repents and believes on the Lord Jesus Christ is justified and regenerated and saved from the dominion of sin.
  • That believers are to be sanctified wholly, subsequent to regeneration, through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • That the Holy Spirit bears witness to the new birth, and also to the entire sanctification of believers.
  • That our Lord will return, the dead will be raised, and the final judgment will take place.

Is DaySpring affiliated with a denomination?

We are a Church of the Nazarene, a group of Bible-believing Christians around the world.  You can find out more about us at www.nazarene.org.  Our denomination helps out on a number of levels, but we like it best for providing us a way to participate in one of the greatest mission organizations in the world.

Having put in our denominational plug, it is a fact that we have a wide array of backgrounds represented among our people:  Baptist, Charismatic/Pentecostal, Catholic, Episcopalian, Methodist, Presbyterian, and non-denominational. We love this diversity!
