THE BIG STORMS RARELY ADD SHOWERS WITHOUT RAIN

Part 3 – Sin (Romans 7:18-23)

Premise: SIN is being connected with something that displeases God.

Definitions: John Calvin/Sin = “hamartia” = missing the mark…

John Wesley/Sin = a willful transgression of a known law of God…

SIN IS A DISEASE THAT AFFECTS EVERYONE.

  • We wish it wasn’t so, but it is.
    • Isaiah 64:6
    • Romans 3:23
    • I John 1:8
  • We need to all confess to the problem. Our world has a sin addiction.

SIN HAS AN ALLURING ATTRACTION.

  • If sin weren’t fun, if it didn’t excite us and give us an adrenalin rush, we wouldn’t do it.
  • It leads us to do things that we wouldn’t do if we thought about it more in advance.

SIN DESTROYS EVERYTHING THAT IT TOUCHES.

  • Romans 6:23
    • Sin kills family unity: Family fights, divorce, abuse, hatred where there should be love.
    • Sin kills world peace: Wars don’t spring up on their own.
    • Sin kills our personal state of tranquility.

SIN HAS AN ANTIDOTE—AND HIS NAME IS JESUS

  • Paul knew about this antidote, so he wrote about it.
    • Romans 6:23
    • Romans 7:24-25
    • Romans 8:1-2

Conclusion: Sin began with man’s first rebellion against God, and it continues to this very day. The disease of sin needs to be dealt with, or it will destroy us.
