PRAYER FOCUS

DaySpring Board

As I asked the Lord how He would have me share, He impressed upon my heart a time when I met an older couple who had been faithfully serving the Lord and His Bride (the Church) for over 40 years. We were both attending a national conference and what began as a causal conversation became a teachable moment that I would carry into my service on the Elder Board.

When they learned I was an Elder at my church, they asked me a question: “Do you know what your most important role is as you serve?” As I listened intently, they said, “to be a cheerleader — to pray for, build up, and rally to support the pastor and the church.”

A cheerleader is defined as an advocator, supporter, encourager, and champion.

A cheerleader is not meant to be a “yes man” agreeing with everything the pastor says or desires. What it actually means is, quite profoundly, to be praying for and with him, listening to his heart of how the Lord is leading, and serving him and his family as he leads. His family is important. They equally need prayer, encouragement, and support. They need a little more love as their spouse, possibly parent, and pastor pours out so much love and leadership upon others.

The Board is also a cheerleader for the church; a great example for the people of God. Just as my own pastor has always taught, “As the leader goes, so go the people.” Peter, who was instrumental in building the Church, addresses church elders saying:

“And now, a word to you who are elders in the churches. I too, am an elder and a witness to the sufferings of Christ. And I too, will share in his glory when he is revealed to the whole world. As a fellow elder, I appeal to you: Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. Don’t lord it over the people assigned to your care but lead them by your own good example. And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor.” 1 Peter 4:1-5

What an honor and privilege indeed to share in His glory. But it isn’t without weight—a burden to carry that should not be taken lightly. It must be done with a willingness to share in the sufferings of Christ. I still believe the greatest call of serving on the Board is exactly what that faithful couple shared: to be a cheerleader for the pastor and the church, turning inward only to seek the Lord’s will, but living outward faithfully, humbly, and eager to serve the shepherd and the flock.
