IBS Method
1. Pray that you might “listen” well – that Jesus might reveal Himself to you!
2. Titles - Read a paragraph, then title it with a few words. After naming all the paragraphs, title the entire passage. Ignore the titles already in your Bible!
3. Words - Find recurring or important words. Use a dictionary or Blue Letter Bible (online) to research those terms.
4. Majors - Find major characters and actions. Of these, ask the “Big 6” questions… who, what, when, where, why and how?
– Who is writing, and to whom? Who is impacted in this passage?
– What is the main concern here? What are the implications of taking the concern seriously?
– When is the passage appearing – after what and before what? Any interesting time elements in this passage?
– Where is this event taking place? Implications?
– Why is this important? Why is this happening now, to this person, in this time?
– How is God working? How does He get things done?
Structural laws – Can you see any contrasts, comparisons, causation, pivots? Why are these important?
Lists – Can you make a list of findings?
Final Questions – How can I see Christ here? Are the lessons of this passage found in other Scriptures? What is to be obeyed and applied to my life?
